Basement Awnings in Toronto: Importance and Features
The use of basement awnings in Toronto and other cold regions of Canada is highly important. Many homes in these areas have basements, and during the winter months, heavy snowfall and rain can create significant issues. Without an awning, snow, ice, and rainwater can accumulate on the basement stairs, making removal difficult and time-consuming. Additionally, this buildup can cause structural damage, leading to damp walls or even water leakage into the basement. For this reason, installing a basement awning in cities like Toronto is essential.
Basement awnings are installed above the stairway leading to the basement and should be designed to fully cover the entrance area. They must be wide and long enough to effectively prevent snow and rain from reaching the basement stairs. The primary function of a basement awning is to keep stairways and entrances clear of snow and water accumulation.
Since basement awnings are typically larger than standard window or door awnings, they endure greater snow loads. The bigger the awning, the more snow it collects, increasing pressure on the structure. Therefore, selecting a sturdy and durable material is crucial. The awning cover should also be weather-resistant to withstand harsh conditions. High-quality materials ensure longevity and reliability.
Polycarbonate awnings are among the most popular and durable choices for basement awnings. They offer excellent resistance to extreme weather and allow natural light to enter the basement due to their transparency.
We are one of the most reputable and trusted teams in Toronto specializing in the design, manufacturing, and installation of basement awnings. Our team uses premium materials and innovative designs to create durable, long-lasting awnings tailored to your needs.
Different Parts of a Polycarbonate Awning
To choose a suitable polycarbonate awning, first, familiarize yourself with its various components and understand the characteristics of each part. Paying attention to these specifications will help you select an awning with optimal performance and durability.
A polycarbonate awning consists of several key components, each playing a role in its strength, durability, and functionality. These components include:
Polycarbonate Sheet – The main covering material of the awning, available in different types such as flat, sloped, single-layer, and double-layer. These sheets can be produced in a variety of colors.
Frame or Structure – The supporting frame that holds the polycarbonate sheets and is attached to the wall. The metal frame is usually made of aluminum profiles, galvanized iron, or, in some cases, stainless steel.
Connecting Profiles – These profiles are used to hold the polycarbonate sheets in place and enhance their strength.
Sealing Washers and Strips – Used to prevent water and dust from entering between the connections and to stop water from leaking from the top to the lower parts of the awning.
Screws and Fasteners – Used to attach the sheets to the metal frame and secure the frame to the wall. The screws and fasteners should be rust-resistant to maintain their durability over time.
UV Coating – It is recommended to use UV coatings for polycarbonate sheets. These coatings help prevent yellowing and brittleness, ensuring a longer lifespan for the sheets.
Steps for Manufacturing and Installing a Polycarbonate Awning (Polycarbonate Canopy)
Our polycarbonate awnings, unlike retractable or electric awnings, are fixed. Retractable awnings are typically made of fabric or electrical and manual systems that can be retracted, but our awnings are permanently and securely installed.
Polycarbonate Features
Polycarbonate is not limited to just white; this material can be produced in various colors. Dark polycarbonates are typically used for creating awnings designed to block sunlight. On the other hand, white polycarbonate is usually chosen for awnings that are intended to protect from rain and snow.
Choosing the Metal for the Awning Frame
At the beginning of the project, depending on the customer’s needs and request, the frame of the awning is made from different metals. The two main options for constructing the frame of our awnings are:
- Galvanized Iron
- Aluminum
In most cases, parts of the metal structure of the awning are made with a sloped or arched shape (semi-circular), so that snow and rain can slide off the awning and prevent water and snow from accumulating on it.
Awning Manufacturing and Installation Process
Expert Visit: Our experts first visit the installation site to take precise measurements. During this stage, the size of the awning and any specific customer requirements are determined.
Choosing the Raw Materials (Metal, Polycarbonate, etc.): Based on the expert’s visit, the appropriate type of metal for the awning frame, type of polycarbonate, and other necessary materials are chosen. The metal color and polycarbonate color are also selected according to the customer’s preference.
Metal Frame Construction: The required metals are first cut to the desired sizes. This stage requires precise calculations, as some metals need to be bent. Specialized equipment is used to bend the metal parts that need to be shaped. The bending is done according to the design specifications, and the amount of bending may vary depending on the project. For example, in some projects, metals are bent in a full arc, while in others, a semi-arc is used. The method of bending the metals is crucial, as some manufacturers bend them manually, which may lack the necessary quality and precision. We use up-to-date and precise equipment to bend the metals. Afterward, welding is done. During the welding process, the designed metal frame is assembled.
Polycarbonate Installation: The polycarbonate sheets, cut to the customer’s selected size and color, are then screwed onto the metal frame. These sheets are fully sealed to prevent water leakage.
Awning Installation: After the metal frame and polycarbonate sheets are installed, the awning is fixed in the desired location. To strengthen the structure and prevent damage to the awning due to wind or snow pressure, several braces are installed at different points.
Characteristics of Arian Home Renovation Awnings
Arian Home Renovation specializes in producing various types of window awnings, basement awnings, and entrance door awnings. These awnings are made from polycarbonate sheets with thicknesses ranging from 2 mm to 10 mm. The selection of polycarbonate thickness depends on the awning dimensions, its intended use, load-bearing capacity (usually snow), and environmental conditions. For example, 3 mm thick polycarbonate is typically used for window and basement awnings.
For larger awnings and those exposed to harsher conditions, thicker polycarbonate is used.
Polycarbonate canopies consist of various components, but two main parts are of the greatest importance. Below, we will explain these two key elements in more detail:
- Polycarbonate Sheets
- Metal Support Structure
Polycarbonate Sheets
These polycarbonate sheets are available in different types. At Arian Home Renovation, we use two main types of sheets (based on customer choice):
- Grade 1 Sheets: These are UV-resistant and corrosion-resistant, making them highly suitable for outdoor environments. Grade 1 sheets have a longer lifespan and greater resistance to environmental changes.
- Grade 2 Sheets: Due to their different structure, these sheets may experience breakage or discoloration. Grade 2 sheets are made of polyethylene and have lower resistance compared to Grade 1 polycarbonate sheets.
Metal Structure
The metal frame of the awnings is typically made from galvanized steel or aluminum. These metals are chosen for their high resistance to rust and corrosion. For large window awnings and basement awnings, galvanized steel is used. The various parts of the awning are connected using bolts and screws, and the awning is attached to the wall using bolts and screws as well.
Grade 1 polycarbonate sheets are usually available in standard 4 ft by 8 ft sheets, while Grade 2 polycarbonate sheets are available in rolls measuring 4 ft by 40 ft, which can be cut according to customer requirements.
For outdoor environments, it is recommended to use Grade 1 polycarbonate, as weather conditions can negatively affect the quality of Grade 2 sheets. However, Grade 2 polycarbonate is acceptable for indoor environments. Grade 1 polycarbonate products come with a 5-year warranty.

The Importance of Considering Aesthetics in Choosing Door and Window Awnings
Polycarbonate awnings for doors and windows are not only a practical choice but also an aesthetic solution that can significantly transform the look of your home or building. In addition to their important functions, these awnings can serve as decorative elements in the building’s facade. Of course, this depends on how much care and taste you put into the design.
To have a beautiful and functional polycarbonate awning, there are several factors you need to consider to achieve a stylish and practical result. The first thing to keep in mind is the color coordination of the awning with its surrounding environment. The color of the polycarbonate awning should harmonize with the existing colors in the space, such as the walls, windows, and doors. This harmony can enhance the sense of unity and beauty in the environment. For example, if your building’s facade has natural tones like earthy, white, or gray colors, choosing awnings with soft or matching hues can create a more appealing look.
In addition to color harmony, you can coordinate the color of the awning with the surrounding environment, such as your garden, yard, or the outdoor area of the building. If your outdoor space is filled with green plants, flowers, and trees, awnings in shades of green, white, or transparent can blend well with the natural surroundings, creating a beautiful view.
There is a wide variety of awning designs, allowing you to choose the best option based on your personal taste. Polycarbonate awnings are available in different designs, from simple and modern styles to intricate and fancy ones. Opting for fancy and attractive models can give your space a unique and special flair. For example, awnings with curved shapes or nostalgic designs can add a distinct sense of aesthetics to your environment.
Choosing nostalgic designs can also be an interesting option. These designs not only give your space a classic and beautiful look, but they also create a memorable feeling, bringing a cozy and warm atmosphere to your home or building. Selecting these models can align with other interior and exterior decor elements and provide a unique nostalgic touch to the space.
Ultimately, polycarbonate awnings are not only practical and enhance safety and comfort in the building, but they also contribute to the beauty of your home or building.
