In some mobile welding projects, it may be necessary to perform welding operations on the upper floors of a building. For example, sometimes welding needs to be done on the third floor or higher. In such cases, depending on the type of work, one of two types of mobile welding machines will be required:
-
Light Welding Machine: Suitable for welding light and delicate parts such as doors, windows, railings, and fences.
-
Industrial Welding Machine: Suitable for welding thick metals and heavier projects.
Welding on Higher Floors with Light Machines
Light welding machines weigh around 6 to 10 kilograms and are easy to carry to the upper floors of a building. These machines are used for welding light components like doors and windows, and they work with the standard 120V electricity in buildings. If the building is connected to the power grid, there is no need to transfer a mobile generator. However, if the building lacks electricity, a mobile generator must also be moved to the upper floors.
Industrial Welding on Upper Floors
If welding of heavy metals, such as columns, is required on higher floors, we use a mobile welding machine with higher power (220V). These types of machines usually come in a complete pack that includes both a welding machine and a generator. Transferring this equipment to upper floors is more difficult and may require the use of a lift.
Limitations of Welding Cable Length
One important factor in welding at height is the length of the welding cable. The longer the cable, the greater the voltage drop and the reduction in welding quality. Typically:
-
Ideal Welding Cable Length: Up to 20 feet (about 6 meters), where welding quality remains very good.
-
Maximum Acceptable Length: 40 feet (about 12 meters). More than this is not recommended unless special technical measures are taken.
In projects requiring cables longer than this, the welding machine is moved to the desired height using a lift.
Types of Cables Used
We use high-quality copper cables because copper is the best conductor of both heat and electricity for transferring energy from the welding machine to the electrode.
Method of Welding at Height
For welding at heights up to 6 meters, the welding machine is placed on the ground floor, and two cables are extended to the welding location:
-
Positive Cable (for melting the electrode).
-
Earth Cable (connecting the machine to a metal body).
In projects like welding the steel frame of a building, which extends from the ground floor to the second floor, the earth cable can be connected to the frame on the ground floor, and only the positive cable is lifted to the upper floor.
Types of Welding Cables by Length
In general, we use two types of cables in our projects:
-
Short Cable: Suitable for welding close to the welding machine and at ground level.
-
Long Cable: Used for welding at height when it is not possible to move the machine to the upper floors.
